Can I build a C&C cage and use it for a rat?

I've been reading about rats and the more I read, the more I think that they could live in a C%26amp;C cage. Could they, or would they escape? I would build a closed one. Rat cages are very expensive and I only have $65 dollars to work with to get the cage and accessories and the rat. I will soon have more, but not very much. Would a C%26amp;C cage be safe for a rat?

If you are referring to these cages http://jackiesguineapiggies.com/guineapi...

then no, I wouldn't recommend one of these cages for rats as the spacing of each square is far too large for all but the largest of large male rats. Rats re able to squeeze through small spaces because.......

Better to be safe then sorry.

Interestingly enough C %26amp; C cages were just being discussed on the rat-only forums this morning. I would have to register to be a member of GuineaLynx just to get a peek at what is being discussed there, but I don't want to register just to do that.

Gosh, they are beautiful cages though are they? And look at those happy Guinea Pigs :)

Your cage is going to be the most expensive purchase of all your rat supplies, and it will last you for many generations of ratties if you buy the right one now.

Update:

Your question about C %26amp; C cages intreged me and I continued my research on them. Went into one of the archives of one of my rat-only forums and found this link in a March 2007 post:

If that grid is as small as it looks in the picture, 1 inch by 1 inch or smaller, that might work for rats. I'm just concerned about a rat getting it's foot caught in a square, or the spaces between the panels. Since rats shouldn't walk around on grid floors, might get a foot caught, you'll have to make them into solid floors by using peel and stick tiles.

Browse the rest of what is on that link. There are some really nice cages there.

Reply:You sure can make a C%26amp;C cage for a rat. Here is a thread of Guinelynx with pictures of rat cages that are C%26amp;C cages. Good Luck! http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewto...
Reply:Your best bet may be to get a second hand cage for him. Remember rats are often best kept in pairs..

I don't want to be nasty, but if you odn't have the money to get a cage, how are you going to be for vets? While it' unlikely a young rat eneds one, it happens, and odler rats often need them, they're prone to tumours and respitory infections.

Good luck though, hope you figure a way. Rats are brill :D
Reply:Yes. A C%26amp; C cage would work with an older rat but a younger rat would easily escape from one.
Reply:C%26amp;C cages would not work because the wiring in the cubes have large spaces so that the rat could very easily slip through.
