C#, C++, Fortran...?

I'm a mechanical engineer with very very minimal programming experience, but I am looking into learning to program.





I need to write a few programs to solve complex mathematical equations but am a little confused at which one to use. I went to microsoft.com to take a look at their 'express' programs to download, but am uncertain which one to pick (if any of them).





Fortran has been suggested, but Fortran is so old. Is there anything other programs that might be more suitable with handling complex equations. I would prefer something with a tutorial attached.

Most of the traditional engineers I know either use Matlab or Fortran for programming. I think this is mainly because they can both do operations on vectors of numbers rather than having to write loops, which for some reason scares them. Matlab will probably be the fastest way to write your programs, and there are probably lots of tutorials available.





Scientists and physicists generally use Fortran, and they don't use it correctly, but it still works.





If you want a marketable skill, learn C and C++ rather than C#, because you can move to non-Microsoft systems pretty easily.

Reply:Since you are an engineer, I would suggest that you use C++. It is a structured language that has been around for a long while. It will allow you to do exactly what you need with minimal extra coding. (C# is bad about fluff code). Also C++ compliers are far more availible than Fortran, but C++ is also pretty old, like i said.

There is the basic money cheat, it involves editing, so don't forget to backup your .ini files.

Make a backup of "skrimish.ini", open the "skirmish.ini" file, change the number "10000" to the desired amount of credits.

C & c generals error, how to solve the serial port problem?

I have set up a local network without servers. The network connection is going through a 3 com switch. I have installed the c %26amp; c generals on to the network PC ( 2 pc) but still cannont play network with each other. I've encounter serial port being used.


Is there any way I can play through network without the serial port error. My networks come with a IP address which I can ping to each other.

Reply:yes, you can buy the grids and connectors from B%26amp;Q,it is actually a metal cube storage unit and there are loads of grids with it to really go mad on a design and it is £23 (I have mananged a double storey one with all the grids). The correx can be bought from any sign makers shop, it is the boards they use to make for sale signs and for a large peice size 8 x 4 (feet) cost me £15, just look through your yellow pages. Reply:The cubes can be gotten at Canadian Tire, London Drugs, Superstore, Zellers, Home Depot and some other stores. Look for sales, you can get it for about 1/2 price if it is on sale. Check websites and fliers.





The chloroplast can be gotten at a hardware store like Rona or Home Depot but it is not always called Chloroplast. It can be called Plasticor or Corrugated Plastic. It is usually near the lumber or the back or the store. I believe you can get it at sign stores, art stores and some stores use it for ads and you might find some for free that has an ad on it.

Deitel is more expensive (50-70 per book new; don't know the used prices) but also has interactive walk throughs.

Is this guy having the worst luck or what? Three starts in a row where he goes 7 plus and lets up 2 runs or less. Tonight he is at 7 2/3 again the Tribe get him 1 run on 5 lousy hits. That makes 4 in a row! They have given this guy NO RUN SUPPORT. He should easily be 17-6 or better. His ERA is like 3.39! as a dedicated Tribe fan, I really like CC Sabathia. While it is a shame that he has recieved little to no run support he is not alone in this. Sometimes you also have to give credit to the opposing pitcher. They might be having a career game or a standout game on that particular night or it could be that the Indians just could not get the bats going. Like in football where they say anything can happen on any given Sunday, I believe that is also true in baseball. The year the Indians were mediocre and had a fraction of NY's payroll, they whaled on them 22-0 in the Bronx. Not a soul on this planet would have seen that one coming. I sincerely hope that CC remains an Indian; I heard he wants to stay but we have heard that from the likes of Thome and Ramirez. My favorite CC memory is seeing the Tribe play the Pirates at PNC and CC gets a hit - watching him lumber to first was something to see and then the hitters actually moved the runners and I think eventually CC came around to score. Big ol' CC - it looked like he could just mow down the opposition. I worry that he will generate an awful lot of interest as a free agent, possibly from some west coast teams and he is from California. Here is some interesting trivia: he was the first player of the A level Mahoning Valley Scrappers to make it to the parent club. I actually have a CC Scrappers bobble. Also - if you do not know, his full name is Carsten Charles Sabathia. Anyways, go Tribe! Detroit sucks. If you do not bleed red white and blue Wahoo, I got no time for you!

Sabathia's had a lot more support than those guys.





In the NL, Peavy (5.38) is 16th of 20. Zambrano (5.19) is worst.





Interesting that the worst in the AL are worse than the NL.
Reply:I believe, although the stats may speak differently, that Jake Peavy of the San Diego Padres has had the least run support all year. Of all of his losses and no decisions, he has given up an average of 2.3 runs and gotten 1.25 runs of support, and he is still the leading strikeout pitcher in the NL with a 2.21 (2nd in NL) ERA and has a 14-5 record. The worst example of all has to be his 16 strikeout perfromance that ended in him getting the ND. Imagine his record with Boston or NY offense. That is tough luck for you. Sabathia is a great young pitcher going through very similar problems. Wicked stuff but little run support. Don't worry though I see great things for him soon.

C&C Red Alert 1995 is screwing up?

I've got C%26amp;C (First Decade - includes 7 different games) installed on my laptop but every now and then the graphics mess up, it does this once in a while. Is there a patch I can get to fix this? I have an HP laptop 2004 with XP.





Also there's one particular level I play in Skirmish that causes my pc to freeze after about 20 minutes. It's the level Circles of Death, I think. And for some reason a random team of missile subs will appear in the ocean and shoot at everyone. They have no base at all. Is the level supposed to be like this or is my game screwed up?

First there is a patch for the game you have. Second on the level where all the submarines appear is not a system glitch. They do have a base but it is on an island that you may not have seen yet. That's a really hard level. I know because I've played it. See the link for the patch. hope that helps.

Command and Conquer 3 has been getting nothing but positive feedback, I dont understand it, the graphics are worse than its predecessor C%26amp;C generals which dates back to like 2002, but when I watch the high def trailers for the game, the graphics look pretty impressive, might this have anything to do with direct x, I dont have the latest version and I am unable to download it from the microsoft website because I can not verify that my software is authentic

They are made out of coroplast and grids. for a hamster you will need mesh grids because the holes are too big in the guinea pig cages, which you can find on the website you mentioned if you ask in the forum.





Bed bath and beyond, target, etc, typically have grids and coroplast is sold at any sign shop. Don't tell them it is for a hamster because some will refuse to sell it to you, some won't.

C & C++ is using 100% CPU?

When I'm running C or C++ on my Windows XP; and hardware is Intel Pentium 3; 724 mhz Processor with 128 RAM. It is using the CPU 100% from time of launching till end. But in Core2Duo 1.6 ghz Processor %26amp; 1 GB Ram with the same XP OS it is using 10 to 20% of CPU. Can any one help me Plsss pls pls. and can tell me what will happen if I use it on Windows 98, or ME on the old CPU.

C %26amp; C++ is using 100% CPU?
I assume you're probably compiling a C/C++ program when the CPU goes 100%? That's always a CPU intensive task, so that's normal. The compiled program could also be running into an infinite loop (completely different problem).





Why are you considering regressing to an older OS? I would not recommend doing that, as 98 and ME were extremely crappy OS's.





If you do so anyway, the best case scenario that you may encounter is that compilation time *could* be slightly faster due to a slimmer OS. 128MB are not a lot for Windows XP, who was designed with 256/512 MB in mind, but are decent for a Windows 98/ME installation.





On the other side, XP is a much better OS and it could very well perform better than 98 or ME as far as compilation times. Also, and most importantly, newer releases of your compiler might become unsupported for such old OS's (98 and ME).





If the 100% time is about your C++ program performing weirdly, that's not something you fix by changing OS's.





So, overall, if you can, upgrade the memory to 256 MB or more. Performance with XP will increase. Downgrading to 98/ME is something you will regret.
Reply:C %26amp; C++ are the languages not apps and u'v'nt included the name of apps on which u r working. So i'm assuming u r talking abt TurboC/C++.





There could be some problems like infinite loop, deadlock situation etc. Check for your code and if it not helps then read further.





First application not uses threading, or if it uses then the Pentium III u've not supports. means ur older does'nt supports Hyper Threading Technology. HT is responsible to minimize the pressure on single thread. without it all thread optimization function are'nt supported by processor. That's why each one is taking its maximum processing memory no wait(), no suspend() etc.





second u've the least memory 128MB it also much responsible for high processor usage. How? let me explain..


Actually processor works like moving in circle. Circle has a point where Cache%26lt;%26lt;RAM exists with data. processor takes a circular move an when reaches to this point asks for next data goes to processing then it comes next for other data. Its called Processor cycle. In case of low %26amp; slow memory, it always become full with data processor asking or it takes time to catch data from hard disk which is already busy with previous tasks. In this case when processor comes to Data entry point where Cache gives data to processor, cache shows it has no data(empty hand) because cache gets it data from RAM and RAM from HDD. this situation sends processor empty hand on work. It increases processor cycle, its load on each thread.





Core2Duo has something different, it has completely redesigned memory controller, processor design, cache design. And u r saying 1GB RAM with at least 800Mhz FSB or more. Core2Duo core works seperately on different data. It means when one core busy in some processing, the second core starts working with next data on line. And High RAM fulfills this demand, 'coz when higher ram with high speed meets with High speed HDD it results in quicker data transmission to processor or vice-versa.





Third thing is i think u r using 16 bit version of C/C++ app. Which also very responsible for increasing number of cycles.





I suggest u to use 32bit version, and UPDATE the motherboard.

Sounds like the graphics card you have may not be a 3D directx 9 certified one. If you are using on board grahics, chances are you wont be able to play CnC 3 until you put in a dedicated graphics card.

C++ Source Code Help.?

Ok, I am making a 3D game, and I don't want the source code and stuff accessed, read, or tampered with. I'm using Visual C++ 9.0 Express Edition. I was going to use a .dll but I've been told that would be a bad Idea. Someone suggested to make a standard c/c++ library and I was wondering how I would go about that.

ONce you compile C++ code to machine executable, you don't have to worry about someone reading your source code. It's very difficult to recover anything remotely like the original source.





This is the same with just about every compiler out there. It's also the same whether you use a DLL, or an object library. Other VM type languages, such as Java and C# have more trouble with this. There are code obfuscators for those languages.





Artwork is what is easiest to copy, as it is not compiled as program source is.





Tampering (i.e. cracking license codes, altering multiplayer behavior, etc.) is a completely different issue. This is very difficult to stop completely. You will have to do a large amount of research to deal with this effectively.

Can I build a C&C cage and use it for a rat?

I've been reading about rats and the more I read, the more I think that they could live in a C%26amp;C cage. Could they, or would they escape? I would build a closed one. Rat cages are very expensive and I only have $65 dollars to work with to get the cage and accessories and the rat. I will soon have more, but not very much. Would a C%26amp;C cage be safe for a rat?

If that grid is as small as it looks in the picture, 1 inch by 1 inch or smaller, that might work for rats. I'm just concerned about a rat getting it's foot caught in a square, or the spaces between the panels. Since rats shouldn't walk around on grid floors, might get a foot caught, you'll have to make them into solid floors by using peel and stick tiles.

I don't want to be nasty, but if you odn't have the money to get a cage, how are you going to be for vets? While it' unlikely a young rat eneds one, it happens, and odler rats often need them, they're prone to tumours and respitory infections.

What you can try to do is save your game files and reinstall the game. My CNC3 always has issues either with sound or game crashes. Sometimes a reinstallation can fix the problem.

Editor could be vi/emacs to type in your code. The compiler would be GNU Chain of Compilers - GCC (gcc for C and g++ for C++). If you want to use a full blown integrated development environment which works across platforms, I suggest Eclipse (though it is a bit heavy, I find it being used in many professional development environments) but my personal choice is GNU Emacs with GCC.

Christmas String Lights on C&C cages????

I have seen pictures of some people's C%26amp;C cages that had christmas lights on them, i purchased some because i thought it looked pretty neat, but i am afraid to put them on because i think the Guinea Pigs might chew on the cords and get well.... you know, and i definately dont want that to happen, they would be at the very top of the cage but i am still apprehensive, can anyone who has put Christmas lights on their C%26amp;C cage tell me if their Guinea Pigs Have attempted to chew on them??, the cage wall is 14 inches high if that helps, do you think they could still reach the cords?

I'm totally against putting any kind of wiring on any of my rabbit's cage, heck even some dogs + cats chew on wiring. Why not get a small xmas tree + put it near (but not too close) to your g.pigs cage. Or find a g.pic xmas decorated treat ? How about making an xmas treat tree for it yourself ? Wiring around any animal that loves to chew would definitely be a hazard.

Generals has been out a long time (almost three years) so I'm sure you could find it relatively cheap - perhaps even used at an Electronics Boutique or Gamestop. Alternately, you can use wire shelves in 2' height x 5' or 6' lengths for the sides and 2' height x 2' or 3' foot lengths for the ends of the cage. These can be found in any home improvement type of store. The shelves are the kind that are mounted on brackets in a closet or laundry room. You won't need the brackets, of course, but the shelves can be secured at the corners with nylon zip ties, which can also be found at a hardware or home improvement store.

It depends highly on your compiler. Some compilers use dll's for their library functions and the GUI components. There are typically options that you can set on your compiler so that these functions will be explicitly included in your executable - you may have to look up the documentation for your specific computer to find out how to do it.





Another thing - before you send out your exe, make sure that you test it out. Find another convenient computer that does not have your compiler installed. Try running your exe on this computer. If it falls with a message that it cannot find some dll, you will have to dig some more.
Reply:Even the DLLs if needed can be sent around, but if you don't you can send the .exe just it.

C&C-29 Yacht shaft vibration problem?

My father has a C%26amp;C-29 sailboat with a Yanmar inboard diesel engine. Last summer the prop shaft was damaged due to a collision and has since been replaced, but there's still a horrible vibration. He thinks the strut might also be damaged but is unable to get a new part or the proper measurements and angles to have one made. Can anyone out there help with this issue?

You do not want an agonizing or returning problem.


Have a reputable mechanic in a reputable boat yard - do a complete allignment - and I would suggest a laser allignment.


If you have to replace the strut and cutlas - then you will have less money in your pocket AND less gray hairs on your head.





ONE MORE THING - I had to replace the bearings in the transmission due to a grounding. The Mechanic said he "would not garrantee his Laser Alignment if I did not replace the sloppy bearings".


Also make sure there is no zinc on your shaft and have your prop tested first.

Reply:Check your cutlass bearing. Whatever the cause, it's going to be a yard repair. Have the boat pulled, and then you can do anything you need to, while it's on the hard. Make sure that if you run the engine to diagnose the problem, that you have a cooling water supply running to the engine. It could be something as simple as a bent or out of balance prop blade.
Reply:Sometimes the strut can be straighten, but it will need to be removed. Most prop repair shops can do this. Have a new bearing installed too.


Was the engine to shaft alignment checked and adjusted? I would have that checked first. Motor could have shifted if the impact was hard enough. You don't need to pull the boat.

Reply:It could be the strut.allignment. Check engine allignment and the cutlass bearing. The collision could easily have changed the allignment of the strut which would damage the cutlass bearing.

C++ is for object oriented programming and very powerful, C is not. Right now everything almost move to OOP (object oriented programming).

There is no difference in learning curve, you will learn the basics of C in any tutorial, but using the powerful cout stream then move into classes, inheritance and other C++ things later in the tutorial. With a lot less syntax errors that are obscure (like placement of variables)

Reply:I'm sorry, but the answer is yes. I was taught C in college. As I graduated they finally got their hands on an affordable C++ compiler and introduced it the semester after I left. I've had to pick it up on my own and I've noticed there are things I haven't wanted to.





I've never totally assimilated, and I've noticed several other gray-hairs who tend to be somewhere in between. I've also noticed younger people who were trained in C++ will write the same sort of codes using the same routines but call it C++. I don't see that as indicating that C is better, rather that different tools are useful for different purposes. The best advice is spend money on a college course. And let the school decide for you. Then study the other. Having said that I am linking to a place called C++.com which has lots of good documentation about both sets of libraries.

You can find tons of tutorials online, but a good starting place is one of the many books you can find at Borders or Barnes %26amp; Noble.
Reply:C and C++ are industry standard programming languages. Pretty much any serious program is written in C or C++. Windows itself is written mostly in C/++.





It's not something you can learn from the Internet; too complicated a skill. You should buy a book. I learn C from Stephen Kochan's "Programming in C", which is where you should start before moving onto C++. If you want to develop applications for the Macintosh platform, however, than you should be learning Objective-C. Stephen Kochan also wrote an excellent book on that. I think you can figure out what he called it. :)

C&C 3 fo 360&PC which order do I build in?

I'm used to the old Command and conquer, nice and slow gameplay that can go on for hours on end. Now I'm faced with a fast paced C and C. What do I build and in what order???





1. MCV


2. Crane


3. Power Plant and/or Refinery


4........ THEN WHAT!?!?!

C%26amp;C 3 fo 360%26amp;PC which order do I build in?
get that barracks up then a war factory, and quick-style. Then put up some base defenses and start to upgrade your units. Don't forget you can turn down the game speed to turtle or something like that to slow down the game for you, give you a little bit more of an edge.
Reply:You got first three right. A crane is optional, it will just give you more build cues (which means you can build more than one building at one time) then you get some Barracks for soldiers and infantary and get a War Factory going for tanks and such. Don't forget the missle silo for nukes while using NOD and the ION cannon for GDI :]





The game has an inbuilt tutorial which will teach you everything you need to know, even advanced tactics, and it's not one of those boring ones either, try it out.

C++/C# programmer learning Java 6 - should I buy Java 5 books?

I'm studying Java for the first time and have had classes in the past on C++ and a little personal C# programming experience. There seems to be a slew of Java 5 references (like Oreilly's nutshell) but my concern is if I should buy these v5 books or wait for the v6 books to be published?





I'm also trying to decide which introductory text to purchase:





Java 6 in 21 days


Core Java - vol 1 (8th ed)


Java Tutorial (4th ed)

C++/C# programmer learning Java 6 - should I buy Java 5 books?
I found Java in a Nutshell really easy to follow, I'd recommend it. I wouldn't go with introductory tutorials that waste your time teaching you general programming things that you probably already know.


The book may look thick and daunting but only the first few chapters are required reading, the rest is a function reference. I managed to read it in 3 days, and hold a 10 month Java contract without any previous experience!


I wouldn't go with a "learn x in y days" book, because you can't learn any language properly in a hurry - it takes years of practice (see link below).


Not much changes between Java versions, the 5th edition plus the release notes from version 6 should be all you need. Good luck!

I would constantly use the java.sun reference or maybe java in a nutshell... but from my personal experience i use mostly online tutorials examples and maybe one book to reference the different main ideas of the language.

I'd dump it into a compiler and do it for you but you left too much out. Impossible to return a syntax error free version without the whole program.





Anyways, I get paid for this. How many points is this worth? ...to do someone's homework for him? Or maybe he's doing contract work! He's getting $70 and hour to let us do it for him!
Reply:pal open the program in C# editor which provides compilation facility also. when u compile the program it will show u the list of syntax errors. click on the error and it will take u to the location where the error is occuring. u will b able to fix it on urself. and remember Syntax errors are the easiest errors to fix as they are grammatical errors for the programming language. b brave and do it urself u can do it...come on...
