What is the bottom of a c%26amp;c cage made of?
The bottom (and sides) of a c %26amp; c cage is made of coroplast. You can find it at a sign shop in any color you'd like. The cost of coroplast depends on the shop. When I go to my place, I ask for large scraps that they have left over. They give it to me for 10.00. It cost 25 dollars total to make my whole entire cage (that included the grids).

You can put a top on there, but it's not entirely necessary unless you have cats or a male and female that need to be seperated. I'm guessing that your cage is for guinea pigs? They usually in most cases don't climb. But if there IS a male and female on either side of a divided cage, you'll need to keep a lid on so the male doesn't get onto the female's side. They're very determined when it comes to females.

What you want to do with a lid is get a few grids and zip tie them in a row so that they cover up the middle of the cage horizontally. Then you'll want to get a piece of wire shelving and tie it to the grids so that it covers the rest of the top that's open. Not sure if that makes too much sense, it's hard to describe. When you do that, the only part that will open is the wire shelving part, so it forms a lid that you can rest on the back grids.

You may want to look on www.guineapigcages.com for examples of what I mean. And if you have any questions, they have message boards on there that can help you.
Reply:you do not nee a top and the bottom is coroplast you can find it a a sign shop
Reply:coroplast. it is usually found at sign shops. and as for as top u can make one using normal wire shelving
Reply:It is called coroplast, and it is a corrugated plastic signboard that is sold at sign shops. If you look in phone book, you should be able to find a sign shop in your area. It is relatively inexpensive.

Whether or not you put a top on your guinea pig cage really depends on whether or not you have other pets. MOST guinea pigs do not climb, and could not get out of a cage made out of 15 inch grids. That said, I have one guinea pig that jumps - she jumps from the floor to the top of her wooden house, and could easily get out of a cage if it didn't have a top on it. She is rare though; most guinea pigs do not climb or jump, so a top is not usually necessary.

If you have any other pets or small children in the house, a top is highly recommended though. Dogs and cats like to get at guinea pigs; a top would prevent the piggies from being harmed. The best material to use is wire shelving, such as what you can purchase at home improvement stores (they usually cut it to size). I recommend attaching the shelf to the back of the cage using plastic "zip ties" - you can get them at the hardware store, about 100 in a bag for $5.00 - then the cage top will be attached securely, but will flip open and closed easily.

Try the following website for cage "instructions" on building a c%26amp;c cage (and some neat pictures of fancy custom built cages, too)

If you have room, by the way, I would recommend going with a 2 x 4 grid cage instead of 2 x3. More room means MUCH happier guinea pigs. It is amazing to see guinea pigs running - and I mean RUNNING - around their cage. They really thrive in a cage that is nice and roomy.
