Rat C&C cages? Spazrats can you help?

i am getting to (female) rats soon, and i was wondering if i could use a closed C%26amp;C cage for them... can i?

Rat C%26amp;C cages? Spazrats can you help?
I wouldn't recommend it. If you were to use a c%26amp;c cage, you would have to make so many adjustments to it that it wouldn't even be worth the while. You would have to put a wire mesh around it because the rat would be able to squeeze through the cube space, you would need to make it multi-level (it would lose its sturdiness then), and you would need to find a way to put the tray outside of the wires because they will chew it.

Instead, buy a cage that is meant for rats. Martin's makes wonderful cages that are recommended and loved by rat owners everywhere due to their stability, spaciousness, easiness to clean, and just overall perfect design. Make sure to order powder-coated as galvanized wires will absorb the smell and you will never get it out. Their cages are great quality for an affordable price. The pictures on the site don't look like the cage is very large, but believe me, they're HUGE! The Ruud cage stands 5 feet tall. I suggest getting the Rat Skyscraper if you can afford it, or the R-680 would be suitable for 2 rats as well.

Good luck!
Reply:You can with some changes. You can buy a glavanized mesh from a hardware store and attatch to the outside of each cage side with flexible wire strips. I have also seen a vatiation of cubes with bar spaces small enough for rats, but I think they were discontinued. Also, the coroplast would hav to be outside of the cubes as they tend to chew. Or you can simply use another tray.

Here are also some possible homemade cage designs, don't only limit yourself to c%26amp;c.
